本品在藥劑中主要作為滴丸、軟膏、栓劑的基質，片劑、膠囊劑的潤滑劑，增塑劑，固體分散體載體、助懸劑、致孔劑等。本品在作為滴丸基質時，由于可以與其他分子量的聚乙二醇混合使用，因此應用面會更廣。本品作為軟膏基質時，不易穿透皮膚且易于清洗。本品作為栓劑基質時，可制備熔點較高的栓劑，在貯藏期內穩定性好，能耐受高溫天氣的影響且藥物的釋放不受熔點影響。本品水溶液可作為助懸劑或調整其它混懸液的黏稠度。在固體制劑中，本品可增加片劑黏合劑的有效性，并影響顆粒塑性，但單獨作用時，效果受限。本品也可與難溶**物制成固體分散體，以提高難溶藥物的水溶性和溶出速度，或者作為脂溶性固體分散體、疏水性包衣的致孔劑。
